Challenge
Cards

A set of 8 challenge cards to
identify the problem, challenge in need to be worked upon.

Path
Cards

Once you have identified the challenge, you need to see what path you want totake to solve/ do something about it. Here are a set of 10 Path Cards.

A Case Study

How do we respond to social injustices and bring an impact in the field as designers when we only have limited exposure as marginalized? How is it possible when our approaches and methods come with their own biases?  Can we rethink how design is practiced?

From our research on different conflicted boundaries like urban ghettos, slums, and communities in Ahmedabad, we recognized that boundaries are shaped by a dynamic interplay of both seen and unseen attributes. We have explored Juhapura, Citizen Nagar, Gulbai Tekra, Ram Rahim Nagar, and Gandivas for our research. These interactions can result in either rigid, microcosmic environments in homogenous settings or fluid, blurred boundaries in heterogeneous ones.

By questioning who all have access to design, the intent is to involve the members of Manav Sadhna in the design process of problem definition, analysis, sense-making, and brainstorming of challenges, priorities, and solutions relevant to the community.

During the session, participants are given four sets of cards in a specific order. They begin by selecting relevant challenge cards from the first set. Afterward, they choose path cards from the second set, which provide a direction on how might the chosen challenge can be tackled. The content on the cards is made inclusive for participants by providing it in Gujarati.

As facilitators, we guide the participants to engage in conversations, plan, and find effective ways to create an impact. Each group of 3-4 works on solutions for the issues at hand. These solutions are then added to a central "solution bank." We show them real-world examples from similar fields as inspiration cards to inspire them. This widens their horizons and helps them generate innovative ideas.

Reflection

The participants were a mix of NGO members, volunteers, educators and inhabitants. They are the “experts”  who are directly involved in the field. Connecting with an NGO also helped to connect us to the real owners of the challenges: the inhabitants of the disadvantaged community. The project’s key aim is also to share the value

and wisdom of the experiences for co-creation instead of designing for ‘them’.

“I thought a lot
and could
collectively
brainstorm.”

The participants were also critical of the workshop process and practices by suggesting what helped and how it can be refined. They also discussed how specific interventions could be an extension or an iteration of their existing programs. The session included a phase of validating the generated solution by putting the value coins of impact, time, need, extension, monetary, and scale on the cards. One participant noted,

“We could reflect on what is
happening worldwide,”
